UPDATE: An injured whale calf that died on Lancelin’s beach has prompted authorities to issue a shark alert for the area.

The injured calf was found by Shire of Gingin rangers at 8.30am. It’s not known how the whale was injured.

A spokesperson for the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions confirmed the baby humpback whale was dead when their team arrived.

“It is likely to have separated from its mother or been sick,” the spokesperson said.

Shire of Gingin rangers removed the whale from the beach.
