Perth divers have been given a scare after a 3.5m great white came within metres of them, less than an hour after two local beaches were closed due to a shark detection.

Surf Life Saving tweeted about the terrifying encounter which occurred at Burns Rocks, about 1.5 kilometres offshore of Burns Beach.

“Shark came within five metres of divers in water,” SLSWA said, adding 500M South of Burns Rocks.

Meanwhile swimmers have been evacuated from two Perth beaches following the detection of a tagged great white.

A City Beach receiver detected the shark at 11.02am. Minutes later, Surf Life Saving WA tweeted that City Beach and Floreat Beach had been closed.

A spokesperson for SLSWA could not relay the size of the shark, but confirmed that both beaches were being closed.

The beach closure comes just over a week after the tragic death of a surfer off Esperance.

Andrew Sharpe was surfing at Kelp Beds along Wylie Bay when he was bumped, bitten and pulled under the water.

Despite the heroic efforts of friends he was surfing with, Mr Sharpe was not recovered.

His board later washed up, covered in bite marks.
