City Beach and Floreat Beach have been reopened, after a shark forced the popular beaches to close earlier on Monday.

EARLIER: City Beach and Floreat Beach have been closed after a huge shark was spotted close to the shoreline.

The Surf Lifesaving WA helicopter spotted a three-metre hammerhead shark 100 metres offshore at 1:32pm, tracking north.

By 1:38pm, the popular Perth Metro shoreline had been closed from Floreat Drain Carpark to near Swanage Ave.

Both City beach and Floreat beach were busy today, as scorching summer weather drove locals to the water. The mercury is forecast to hit a sweltering 39 degrees today – the hottest February day this year.

Surf Lifesavers are unsure of when either beach will reopen.
