UPDATE: Lifesavers have reopened North Cottesloe and Cottesloe Beaches.

Earlier in the day swimmers were ordered out of the water at Perth’s popular Cottesloe beach after a shark sighting.

The Westpac helicopter reported a 2m shark of unknown species about 10m from shore and tracking south at 1.53pm on Sunday.

City Beach was also closed after an earlier shark sighting but was reopened about 1pm on Sunday.

A 3m shark was spotted of Swanbourne beach at 11.49am about 50m off shore. It was seen hanging around in the vicinity of the nudist section while swimmers were in the water.

Beaches were packed on Sunday as the city broke yet another temperature record, posting the sixth day of 40C in a row.

Perth is the second capital city in Australia to hit six 40C or above days in a row, equalling Adelaide’s achievement of six successive days in 2009.

Sunday also marks the eleventh day of the Summer to hit over 40C
