All ability play: City of Bunbury opens new Mangrove Cove playground

A new recreation space aimed at allowing families of all abilities to play together in the same area has opened a new level of inclusiveness in Bunbury’s CBD.

The Mangrove Cove all abilities nature play area, located near the Koombana Park Lookout off Koombana Drive, is a multi-level play area inspired by the mangroves of the Leschenault Inlet.

The $2.39 million project connects a series of climbing frames, ladders, slides and rope bridges to a unique sky walk and lookout deck that is accessible by wheelchair.

Mangrove Cove features wheelchair accessible picnic, barbecue and toilet facilities, as well as sand pits, tunnels, a water play area, basket swing, drums, chimes and cubbies.

The park was opened at an event on Friday, February 24 at a gathering attended by City of Bunbury Mayor Jaysen Miguel, Bunbury MLA Don Punch, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Bunbury’s Co-Design Access Panel member Paul D’vorak.

“I think it’s set a new benchmark for accessible playgrounds,” Mr D’vorak said, adding that the design made it easier for families to connect.

“Little kids in wheelchairs can play with their brothers and sisters and be part of it.”

Mr Punch thanked the City of Bunbury’s Co-Design Access Panel for its valuable insights that helped in the creation of the playground.

“Mangrove Cove is a popular part of Bunbury, and this new nature playground will further boost the regional city’s reputation as a must-visit destination,” he said.
