Lance Morris shines in Sheffield Shield victory over Queensland as finals loom for Chloe Piparo’s Scorchers

Dunsborough’s Lance Morris was a shining light with the ball for Western Australia in their seven-wicket Sheffield Shield win over Queensland at the GABBA last week. Morris, pictured, finished with impressive figures of 4-21 from 10 overs as WA tore through the Bulls for just 129 and went on to win comfortably on the final day. Bunbury debutant Jayden Goodwin missed out again in the second innings, having made 10 under difficult circumstances in his first knock. The 19-year-old crunched a cover drive off Mark Stekete but was dismissed by the next ball for just six — shouldering arms to a delivery angling back in to him and taking off stump. An unbeaten 47 from Goodwin’s opening partner Cameron Bancroft saw them to victory, completing a chase of just 95 runs on day four. More cricket: None of the South West’s products featured as WA cruised to victory and moved to top spot in the Marsh One-Day Cup on Monday. Former Colts Cricket Club batter Sam Whiteman missed the game as he continues to recover from a concussion he recieved when a ball thrown in from the outfield hit him in the head during his monster 187 for Fremantle last weekend. Meanwhile, Chloe Piparo’s Perth Scorchers side are poised for another tilt at a WBBL championship, with the Bunbury star playing an important role after another victory against fellow top-four candidate Adelaide. Piparo slid down the order after a blistering start by openers Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney on Wednesday, with the Scorchers posting 3-177 from their 20 overs. It positions them well for a finals campaign less than a week away, with the Scorchers now likely to finish inside the top three. Like many in the Scorchers’ middle order, Piparo has been used in several positions behind her side’s in-form opening pair, but despite coming in late in the innings, is yet to be dismissed for single figures all tournament. Piparo’s Scorchers could end the Melbourne Stars’ finals hopes when they meet in Adelaide on Saturday, before facing the Sydney Sixers the following day. They will then begin their finals campaign with a semi-final on either November 24 or 25, before the final on November 27.
