Applications open for South West residents to put hand up for 2023 The Y WA Youth Parliament

Young people across the South West region and beyond are being asked to put their hands up for a great opportunity. Applications have opened for the those aged 15-25 to take part in this year’s The Y WA Youth Parliament. Those selected will have the chance to debate legislation within the State’s Houses of Parliament, giving them first-hand experience. This year is the 28th year the program has run in WA, with youth members given experience in leadership, public speaking, writing legislation and teamwork. Participants will work together to create a piece of draft legislation, known as a Bill. They will then debate the Bill and have it put to the test on the parliamentary floor. Fifty-nine young people participated in the 2022 Youth Parliament, where eight Bills were presented on topics ranging from art therapy to local government reform. The experience is year long, with the highlight being a residential camp between July 9-14. Youth Minister Simone McGurk said she encouraged young people who wanted to create change to step up and have their voices heard. “Youth Parliament is a unique experience that will help shape our future leaders,” she said Applications close on March 26.
