Australia Day crash at Caves-Redgate Road intersection in Margaret River injures one and sparks fire

Two families have had their Australia Day long weekend in the South West ruined after a crash, which also started a fire in the holiday region. Six ambulance crews and two fire and rescue crews were sent to the crash involving two cars, which happened about 11.15am near the intersection of Caves and Redgate roads — about 10 minutes south of Margaret River. Three adults and two children were involved and the RAC Rescue Helicopter was sent to the scene to assist. A St John WA spokesperson said one man, who is believed to have non-life threatening injuries, was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital. He is expected to arrive at RPH at 2pm. The crash also triggered a scrub fire north of Redgate Road, which firefighters are battling to gain control over. Caves and Redgate roads are closed and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued an alert just before 12.15pm warning there was a lot of smoke in the area.
