Investigation launched into Collie Mineworkers Memorial Pool has been closed with no further action required

A WorkSafe investigation into a near-death experience at a South West swimming pool has been completed, with no further action to be taken. Last year, the Collie Mineworkers Memorial Pool was abruptly shut after a chlorine gas leak led to a woman in her 50s being treated at Collie Hospital before being transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital. Shire of Collie president Ian Miffling said the investigation into the March 16, 2025 incident was conducted by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety. “Any incident involving dangerous goods needs to be investigated and this has occurred by DLGIRS and the Shire of Collie,” Cr Miffling said. “DLGIRS fully investigated the incident and concluded that no further action was required. “The shire continues to perform regular safety audits through Royal Life Saving WA of the facility, maintains suitable policies and procedures, and undertakes staff training and safety activities to ensure the pool operates to the required safety and operational standards.” A DFES spokesperson at the time said the leak came from a large cylinder containing chlorine. Eight firefighter crews from the Collie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, the Brunswick Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and Bunbury Career Fire and Rescue Service were deployed at the scene and the leak was contained.
