Those planning on travelling around the region on Sunday have been urged to stay safe, as the South West prepares for windy, wet and dangerous road conditions.

An intense low-pressure system is expected to impact large parts of the WA coast this weekend, as the remnants of a tropical low-pressure system interacts with a cold front.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Catherine Schelfhout said the worst of the weather system would likely hit the South West during Sunday afternoon and into Monday morning.

“There is likely to be rainfall all the way down the west coast from the Pilbara down around the South West corner from Sunday morning and moving through the State during Sunday and the rest of Monday,” Ms Schelfhout said.

Heavy rainfall is likely down the west coast from Kalbarri to Albany with totals of around 20mm-30mm and some isolated falls up to 70mm.

Ms Schelfhout said big swells were expected to develop during Monday, with the total wave height over 8m.

The conditions are considered unusual for this time of year, but Ms Schelfhout said they would start to ease by Tuesday.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services urged residents to prepare for the storm by tying down loose items, cleaning their gutters, packing away furniture and items that could be moved by winds and trimming branches near their homes.
