An emerging golfer from Margaret River is one of the latest athletes to be selected into the South West Academy of Sport after showing plenty of potential.

Nick Liebenberg was recently signed up to the academy’s golf squad and is now receiving high-level coaching and assistance as he aims to progress his promising golfing career.

The extra support will come in handy as the 17-year-old gun prepares for the Drummond Golf Junior Amateur Championships in November.

The Margaret River Senior High School student, who has been impressing as a member of the Bunbury men’s pennant team, aims to one day turn professional.

Nick believes the extra support offered by SWAS will support his development as an athlete.

“I think that with assistance from some of the services and facilities offered by SWAS, I will be able to get my game to the next level,” he said.

The SWAS golf squad, which boasts former pro golfer Shani Waugh as one if its coaches, forms part of a pathway to higher representative levels.

SWAS is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to even the playing field between junior South West athletes and their peers in Perth by providing talent development opportunities in the region.

In addition to a golf squad, the academy also runs a sprint squad plus partner sport programs in Australian Rules Football, hockey and netball.

An individual athlete support program caters for those excelling at a sport not covered by the partner programs.
