G’day Australia: 300 international travel agents to descend on Perth as part of major tourism push

Hundreds of foreign travel agents will be jetted to Perth and treated to some of the State’s best attractions and experiences in a major coup for WA’s recovering tourism sector. The “familiarisation” — organised by Tourism Australia — comes as part of a renewed push to drive record international visitation to the country, with WA viewed as integral to those plans. Around 300 agents from key markets including China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe, the UK, New Zealand and the US will descend on Perth in October as part of the event, which is named “G’day Australia”. They will be wined and dined and meet face-to-face with local tourism operators as part of jam-packed itineraries that include visits to Rottnest Island, the Matagarup Bridge climb, Fremantle Prison, CBD walking tours and swimming with dolphins in Rockingham. Some agents will also head to Ningaloo Reef to swim with whale sharks and down south to the Margaret River wine region. The participating agents will be drawn from a pool of 40,000 who have completed a training program run by Tourism Australia designed to equip them with the knowledge required to sell holiday packages Down Under. Federal Tourism Minister Don Farrell said the COVID pandemic had generated “a heap of pent-up demand” but that some tourists needed an extra push — often through the recommendation of their travel agent – to book a trip to Australia. “We think that by bringing (the agents) and giving them a personal experience of Perth, that this will generate so much business that we will actually have a record turnout of people to Australia over the course of this year and into next,” Mr Farrell said. Tourism Australia managing director Pip Harrison described the familiarisation as the agency’s “flagship event” for international agents, with the 2024 edition the biggest to date. “We know that when (agents) come here, as a result of us showing them not telling them how great Australia is, they’re actually going to go back and sell more of it,” she said. G’day Australia is expected to pump $2.5 million into the WA economy during the event itself — from October 13 and 18 — and result in holiday bookings worth tens of millions of dollars. China is a key target, with visitor numbers slow to recover post-COVID as a result of frosty international relations between Canberra and Beijing. With that relationship now thawing — as evidenced by the removal of Chinese tariffs on Australian wine and barley — Tourism WA managing director Carolyn Turnbull said the Middle Kingdom represented a massive growth opportunity. “And then in addition (to China), we want to leverage travel agents that are coming from continental Europe, in particular France, which is a new market for us as (Qantas) launch a new direct service in July of this year,” she said. WA Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti said there had been “strong numbers” on a recent trial of direct flights between Perth and Shanghai, building momentum for a permanent non-stop route. She said the trial — timed to coincide with Lunar New Year — had also illustrated Chinese demand for iconic WA activities. “The feedback we’ve had through the month-long trial is experiences off Rottnest Island, like catching crayfish and cooking them on the boat, were sold out within a couple of days of the flights being offered,” she said. “So they do bring huge demand for those types of experiences and that’s why we continue to chase the Chinese tourists.”
