A driver whose truck collided with a sedan and rolled on Reid Highway on Thursday morning will spend the night in the state trauma unit.

A Mitsubishi Lancer and a Hino Truck carrying asbestos crashed just before 7.30am on Reid Highway eastbound in West Swan.

The 57-year-old truck driver had to be extricated from the wreck, with crews managing to free him about 7.50am.

A specialist from St John, plus DFES crews from Kiara and Midland were deployed to the scene to assist with the driver’s extrication.

He was raced to Royal Perth Hospital under lights and sirens where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police say they believed the asbestos was “contained”.

Four St John Ambulance units, as well as DFES and police, responded to the crash.

A second patient, a female teenager, was taken under normal road conditions to St John of God Midland Public Hospital.

Reid Highway eastbound was closed from Drumpellier Drive to West Swan Road but has since reopened.
