Margaret River Pro launches on Saturday for a 10 day world-class surfing event

The world’s best surfers have gathered in the state’s south to mark the opening of the Margaret River Pro for 2022.

Tourism Minister Roger Cook was at Surfers Point in Prevelly on Saturday to launch the start of the world surfing tournament.

The 10-day event, running from April 24 to May 4, will include local surfing heroes Bronte Macaulay and Jack Robinson, as well as world number one surfer’s Carissa Moore from Hawaii and Brazil’s Filipe Toldeo.

The 11-time world champion Kelly Slater has also joined the Margaret River Pro.

The global event, which is set to draw thousands of spectators to the South West, marks the first year of a three-year sponsorship deal between the McGowan Government and the World Surf League.

The world-class sporting event is set to inject millions of dollars into the local economy, with Mr Cook saying it’s held in one of the “most special parts” of WA.

“The next 10 days promise to deliver competitive sport at the highest level in one of the most breathtaking locations on Earth,” he said.

“The McGowan Government is proud to support this amazing event which will showcase our South-West to a global audience and generate millions of dollars for local businesses in the region.”

The Tourism Minister went further to offer a warm welcome to the competitors and teams to the South West.

“(We) encourage them to explore the region’s stunning coastline, rolling vineyards, award-winning restaurants and all-round warm hospitality.

“As visitors to Wadandi and Bibbulmun country, I also encourage everyone to connect with the region’s rich Aboriginal culture.”
