Two men injured in a fatal Father’s Day crash are in a stable condition in hospital, as the public mourns another two lives lost on the Indian Ocean Drive road.

The horror head-on collision happened about 1.55pm yesterday, about 10km north of Old Yanchep Road, north of Perth.

A white Mitsubishi Triton ute was travelling north on Indian Ocean Dive when it crashed with a blue Toyota Landcruiser travelling south near a bend in the road.

Two 33-year-old men in the Mitsubishi ute died at the scene, while the men in the other car were not seriously injured.

A rescue helicopter was initially sent to the crash but stood down.

Witnesses described a horrific scene with the front end of both vehicles smashed and what appeared to be the engine of one pushed back into the cab.

“It was just horrific and I feel quite traumatised,” said one witness, who did not want to be named.

“One of the vehicles was alight and burning under the hood and people had fire extinguishers out.

“The front of one car was punched right back to the A-pillar and it looked like the engine had gone right through the car.”

Others flooded social media with condolences to the family and friends of the men who lost their lives.

Major crash investigators were last night examining the crash scene and have appealed to the public for information about the crash.

WA Police Inspector Gary Lewis described the scene as “graphic” and said several people had stopped and tried to provide first aid to the victims.

“There were numerous people first at scene but obviously the remote location made it hard for first responders to attend,” he said.

One local who regularly drives the stretch of road said corner was known as dangerous because the camber of the caused vehicles to drift to the middle.

Indian Ocean Drive has gained notoriety in recent years following a series of fatal crashes which have led to upgrades and road safety campaigns.

Last September, two Chinese tourists died in a head-on collision between a bus and car near Cervantes.

In December 2018, a three-car crash near Lancelin killed three people and injured 11 others when a ute clipped a camper trailer before crossing to the wrong side of the road and hitting a minibus.

In August 2018 a man died after his car burst into flames after a collision just north of Seabird Road in the Brenton Bay.

The notorious stretch of road was also previously rated one of the most dangerous in regional WA, according to an RAC risky roads survey.

Police would like to speak with anyone who witnesses the crash or has dash cam footage of the vehicles involved in the area in the lead-up.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
