Carlton have been plunged into an off-season crisis with two players forced to report to hospital after suffering complications from allegedly taking recreational drugs.

7NEWS understand the pair were partying at a player’s house on Saturday night.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed they responded to an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning with Advanced Life Support paramedics attending the scene.

A man in his 20s was then taken to hospital with upper body injuries in a stable condition.

The players have since been discharged from hospital.

Carlton later confirmed that Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward were both admitted to hospital, but didn’t say anything about alleged drug use.

“Cowan received medical treatment and underwent observation, before being discharged a short time later,” the club said in a statement.

“Will Hayward experienced a minor cut to the head after a fall, and admitted himself to hospital where he received stitches before being discharged.

“The club has been in regular contact with both players, with priority for their wellbeing and both players have now received the necessary care relating to their separate circumstances.”

The players are currently on leave from their club.

The scandal is certain to put the spotlight on the AFL and the controversial illicit drugs policy, which was revamped earlier this year.

“Watch the AFLPA continue to defend the Illicit drugs policy,” Seven commentator Kane Cornes said.
