Melbourne have suffered a massive health scare just over a week before the grand final with coach Simon Goodwin forced to miss training after falling ill.

The Demons are about to start an open training session in front of fans at Joondalup Arena and Goodwin was scheduled to speak at a media conference.

But assistant coach Troy Chaplin filled his spot and explained that both Goodwin and assistant Adem Yze were isolating at their hotel.

“He’s woken up a little bit crook - both him and Ooz,” Chaplin said.

“They’ll be fine come tomorrow but the club didn’t want to take any risk. The docs said to stay back.

“Given the stakes at hand, it’s important to make sure we don’t have something that sweeps through the whole club.”

Geelong had an illness tear through a core part of their team ahead of last week’s preliminary final in a sign of how easily players can be impacted while living together.

The Cats were still in quarantine but Melbourne players are back in the community and interacting with the public. Chaplin revealed Yze had his second COVID-19 vaccination yesterday.
