Emerging Fremantle superstar Murphy Reid has led the way among voting for the AFL Players Association’s 22under22 team, while three of West Coast’s best young talents have also earned places in the side.
On Wednesday, the AFLPA revealed 81 per cent of submissions for the fan-chosen team included Reid, who figured ahead of Hawthorn’s Nick Watson on 80 per cent as the most popular player in submitted sides.
Having been selected in the forward pocket before winning the AFL’s Rising Star award last year, the 20-year-old has been placed on the wing in this year’s line-up.
Meanwhile, West Coast star Harley Reid has been chosen as the side’s ruck-rover and Reuben Ginbey has been selected at centre-half-back, while first-year utility Willem Duursma figured on the interchange bench.
Fremantle’s Reid has elevated his game to another new level in his second season at the top level, emerging as a legitimate contender for All Australian status by producing per-game averages of 23.4 disposals, 7.3 score involvements and 0.9 goal assists.
After suffering a blow to his groin against Melbourne earlier this month in what was just his side’s third defeat of the season against Melbourne, he was sidelined for their victory over Adelaide on Friday night and has been ruled out of this week’s trip to Melbourne to take on Carlton.
West Coast star Harley Reid has earned selection in the side for the third year running, joining Jack Darling (2012-14) as the only Eagle to achieve the feat.
The 21-year-old has produced a brilliant third campaign for the Eagles to rocket into favouritism to claim his first John Worsfold Medal as their best and fairest player, having averaged 24.8 disposals and 6.7 clearances across 22 games this season.
Last year’s No.1 draft selection Duursma has given glimpses into his massive potential by producing some stunning individual moments throughout the year.
He was seen among the leading contenders to win the Rising Star award up to the midway stages of the season, but has since slipped behind Carlton pair Jagga Smith and Harry Dean — who have both been named in the side — in the eyes of most experts.
Ginbey has been picked in the team despite suffering what turned out to be a season-ending quad injury against Port Adelaide in round 13.
The 21-year-old continued to enhance his reputation as one of the AFL’s best emerging key defenders in the early stages of West Coast’s campaign, having earned plaudits for his performances against superstar forwards including Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron and Fremantle’s Josh Treacy.
West Coast key forward Jobe Shanahan, who has slotted 29 goals from 22 games this season and also hauled in a gave-saving defensive mark against Port Adelaide in round three, was selected in an initial 40-player squad but missed the cut for the final team.
