VideoOllie Wines has become the first Port Adelaide player to win the Brownlow Medal

He's the toast of the AFL and right now anything to do with 2021 Brownlow medallist Ollie Wines is hot property.

At least, that's the hope of an extremely optimistic football fan, who is selling the Port Adelaide star’s place card from Sunday night's ceremony for the eye-watering sum of $8,000.

Collegians Football Club colts coach Andrew Fordham was still on a high from his team’s grand final win in the Perth Football League when he attended the ceremony at Optus Stadium.

He was seated close enough to Wines to not only see his face the moment he was announced the winner, but also to help himself to a souvenir from the table.

“I put it in my pocket and then a friend said ‘where have you been?’ and I said ‘this is where I’ve been’ and pulled this little place card out of my pocket,” Mr Fordham said.

“If Ollie Wines thinks it is worth something to him, he can have it back but any Port fan that wants to put their money where their mouth is, it’s theirs.”

Mr Fordham said he had received a “few nibbles” from prospective buyers.

“Someone wanted to swap me a carton of beer for it but they’ve sold me under there.”

“The price is there, otherwise it’ll just sit on the top of my drawer.”

Wines’ place card was not the only piece of Brownlow memorabilia trending on social media.

A picture showing his acceptance speech notes scrawled on the back of Port Adelaide football boss Chris Davies’ card was posted on Twitter on Monday morning.

The speech itself showcased Wines’ humility and love of the game.

“I’m a little bit rattled, to be honest, still,” Wines said on stage shortly after winning.

“There are so many great players that I still look up to at my age ... and a lot of them are obviously playing on Saturday in the biggest game of the year.

“I’m extremely envious of them and I’d love to be in their position.

“It wasn’t to be this year and I know we’ll rebound and go again next year.”

Wines is from the Murray River town of Echuca, as is Melbourne midfielder and Brownlow third place-getter Clayton Oliver, and he used to call famous AFL commentator Rex Hunt on 3AW talkback as a child.

He was initially “shocked” that Port took him with the No.7 pick in the 2012 draft, saying there were a few tears at his house, but he thanked the Power for turning him into the person he has become.
