Last-placed Victoria have set Sheffield Shield leaders NSW a target of 290 runs to win their match at the SCG, after a quickfire century from former Blues batsman Nic Maddinson.

Captain Peter Handscomb declared Victoria’s second innings at 1-168 late on Sunday’s third day at the SCG.

Victoria potentially will have at least 108 overs to bowl NSW out and secure a win to keep their final hopes alive, while a victory for NSW will go a long way to securing their spot in the season decider.

Left-hander Maddinson followed up his first innings 95 with an unbeaten 105 off 90 balls.

He smashed nine fours and four sixes, striking a legside maximum off four different bowlers.

Maddinson added 161 runs for the second wicket with Marcus Harris who finished 54 not out.

NSW were earlier dismissed for 310 in their first innings, a deficit of 121.

A last-wicket stand of 51 between Conway (28 not out) and Liam Hatcher (27), who each made their highest first-class score, held the Bushrangers up either side of lunch and ensured the visitors didn’t have the option of enforcing the follow-on.

Resuming on Sunday at 4-201, chasing Victoria’s 7(dec)-431, NSW lost 5-54 before the last pair soaked up 25 overs.

First-class rookies Wil Parker (3-54) and Will Sutherland (2-29) did the early damage with the ball on day three.

Quicks Peter Siddle (2-70) and Chris Tremain (2-54) were the other multiple wicket-takers.
