Perth Scorchers legend Simon Katich is set to take the reins of his former club for a one-off $1 million tournament in the West Indies later this year.

The reigning Big Bash champions will be the Australian representative in the third edition of the Guyana Global Super League, which pits some of the world’s best T20 teams against each other for a $1.4 million payday.

Hobart Hurricanes flew the Australian flag in the inaugural tournament, while a Cricket Victoria XI featured in 2025.

While Adam Voges is set to remain as the Scorchers’ full-time coach, despite handing over the Western Australia job to assistant and close mate Beau Casson for BBL16, he will be unavailable throughout the late July-early August tournament due to commitments with Trent Rockets in The Hundred.

Katich, who captained the franchise to their maiden title in BBL03, will take over the role with a squad that is likely to look vastly different to the team that lifted a record-extending sixth title in January.

However, Perth Scorchers General Manager of High Performance and Elite Teams, Kade Harvey, said the competition will be used as a learning experience, suggesting some of the squad’s young players, as well as the next generation, could appear for what will officially be called a Perth Scorchers XI.

“The GSL will provide our players with a wonderful opportunity to test themselves in foreign conditions against some of the best T20 sides from around the world,” he said.

“Taking part in a tournament of this nature will also give our players an opportunity to ready themselves for the Australian domestic summer, which includes our BBL title defence.

“In Adam’s absence, we are also incredibly fortunate to be able to call on someone with the credentials and experience of Simon Katich. Our players will benefit greatly from being able to work with him through the duration of the tournament.”
