West Coast’s hope of luring West Australian forward Mitch Georgiades home will have to wait until at least the end of 2029 after the goalkicker re-signed with Port Adelaide.

Georgiades was out of contract next year and was set to become a free agent with the Eagles as well as several Victorian teams widely reported to be interested in the star spearhead.

However, the 24-year-old has decided to commit to the Power for at least the next three seasons after inking a two-year contract extension when he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Georgiades, as well as fellow WA products in Sydney’s Chad Warner and Melbourne’s Trent Rivers, were widely viewed as key targets for Andrew McQualter’s side because all three had been set to come out of contract next year.

“It was obviously a big decision. Any decision like this is a massive one, and you go through all the processes and talk to the people around you. But it’s one I’m very excited about and very comfortable with, so very excited to be here for a couple more years,” Georgiades said on Wednesday.

“I think there’s a lot of excitement. I mean, this year hasn’t gone to plan necessarily for us as a club, but you can take a lot of positives out of it with the coaching, with the group, with the players. I think there’s been a lot of excitement.

“I really enjoy my time here. I really feel part of this club. It’s like my family almost, and I’m really settled in Adelaide. This is my seventh year, so I’m really enjoying it. So there were a lot of points for me to stay.”

Georgiades has established himself as one of the best forwards in the AFL since he was recruited out of Subiaco with pick No.18 in the 2019 draft, booting 213 goals in 112 games including a career-high 58 last season from 23 matches.

The 192cm forward said as the year went on, to re-sign at the Power was “the clear decision for me”.

“To be honest, at the start of the year, I was obviously contracted ‘til next year, so I wasn’t thinking too much about what was going to happen and what it was going to look like,” he said.

“I think as the year played out, obviously you look at all cases and all scenarios, and it’s a big decision. You have to do all your due diligence with that, and that’s what your manager’s there for. I think as everything played out, this was the clear decision for me.”

Georgiades said his family was “stoked” that he would remain at Alberton despite it meaning he would not return to WA for at least a few more years.

“I’ve obviously had discussions with them for months now about the whole process,” he said.

“They love it coming over to Adelaide and visiting. So they’re very excited. As long as I’m happy and enjoying where I’m at, they’re stoked.”
